Starting on solids (4 to 6 months)

Each baby reaches the point when it needs more nutrition at its own time, different from other babies.

Solid foods are introduced when the baby is no longer gaining as much weight a it should, or when it seems constantly hungry and restless, or when baby is 6 months old and still exclusively milk-fed.

Children tolerate rice very well, so some rice flour preparation is usually their first food other than milk. Later, other gluten-free cereals are incorporated. If the baby is bottle fed, cereals are added to the bottle.

If the baby is breastfed, usually cereals are mixed with milk to make a very thin porridge offered to the baby with a small spoon with dull edges. At this stage, food should be offered after the milk.

As the baby accepts one type of food, other cereals and single ingredient purees can be tried. It will be around six months when a baby can eat more complex purees with more than one ingredient.
